Our January Retreat
It was a frigid January weekend when the Grassroots Water Testing and Enforcement team came together in Burnside, KY to establish team priorities for the year and for a full day of training. 12 Alliance members and friends came from 5 states to teach each other and learn how to identify water quality violations – particularly around coal mine sites – and how they can enforce regulations like the Clean Water Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act in their communities. The team also reviewed how to use water testing equipment, testing protocols and data collection tools, and a few members braved the cold to collect samples at nearby sites.
One outcome from the event were reflections on how much more there is to learn and the team has set priorities for the year that focus on bringing members together for more workshops, training opportunities, mine monitoring, and water testing field excursions around the region.
