The Alliance for Appalachia is composed of member organizations working together to create a sustainable future for our region. We engage with a variety of organizations in order to strengthen our partnerships and the collective power we hold together. While we consider ourselves allies and supporters of many different aspects of social justice, we ask that all of our members support at least one of our three core goals: 1. ending mountaintop removal coal mining, 2. putting a halt to destructive coal technologies, and 3. creating a sustainable, just Appalachia.
The Alliance serves as a channel through which our member groups participate in regional and federal-level campaigns. We strive to create a model of ways local, frontline community vision and wisdom can be communicated to promote social change. Joining an Alliance member organization can help connect you with what’s happening in your community, and how you can engage to promote the changes you seek. As a coalition, the Alliance primarily focuses our work in rural communities of Central Appalachia, but our members are working statewide and across the region in Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana. Check out the map of our members on the Our Work page to see which group is nearest to you!
Alliance work teams are made up of volunteers and staff of our member organizations and allies who come together to build connections that bolster local organizing work and regional strategy. The Federal Strategy Team works to combat the dangers associated with mining, address the legacy costs of more than a century of coal mining, and organize for a healthy environment through regional and federal campaigns. This team advocates for and defends key water protections, and coordinates around coal mining permits, regulatory oversight and other federal policies and rulemakings. The Economic Transition Team engages our grassroots coalition by connecting community experience with action campaigns to build vision-led strategies that outline a path towards a healthy, prosperous, and just Appalachia. Our teams meet regularly via conference calls. You can keep up with the Alliance calls calendar here, which includes information for our committee calls and meetings. Anyone is welcome to join our teams– please do! Contact us to learn what the teams are currently working on and to get in touch with team convenors.
